What is Baristas On Tap?

Baristas On Tap is the first service from Milk, No Sugar focused on making life in the specialty coffee industry a little easier for cafes and baristas. We specialise in providing highly trained and experienced baristas to coffee shops across London for temporary cover.

Our mission with Baristas On Tap is to improve the quality of living for baristas in the specialty coffee industry. We believe that due to the training and experience required, being a barista is a skilled trade and should therefore be paid - at the very least - a living wage. Originally launched in London at the end of 2017 you can now book baristas through our app across the UK and Australia.

How much does it cost in the UK?

Barista rates change based on notice given and vary as follows:

(Excluding WeWork sites)
Standard rate: £13/hour
48 Hours Notice: £14/hour
24 Hours Notice: £15/hour
On The Day: £16/hour

Platform Fee: £2/hour ex.VAT
Discount of 25% will be applied to the platform fee for bookings of 40+ hours/week, meaning it’s a little cheaper for you without jeopardising the baristas wages. A discount rate of 15% is applied to events.

How much does it cost in the US?

Barista rates change based on notice given and vary as follows:
Standard rate: $20/hour
48 Hours Notice: $22/hour
24 Hours Notice: $24/hour
On The Day: $26/hour

Agency Fee: $3/hour
Bookings of 40+ hours/week will have an agency fee of $2.5/hour

How good are the Baristas?

Most baristas that come to us have been highly recommended by people we trust and even then, as a standard we only represent baristas with a minimum of two years experience working in the industry. On top of this we put all of our baristas through rigorous skills tests to ensure they can handle performing to the best of their ability in different environments and on different equipment.

We understand that there isn’t a flawless industry recognised qualification that everyone accepts the way we accept GCSEs, A Levels or a Bachelor’s Degree. With this in mind we ensure our baristas are trained in line with both our own internal training programme and the SCA Coffee Diploma. Many of our baristas even come with SCA Qualifications due to their extensive experience within coffee before joining the service.

Do we supply permanent staff?

No we do not. Baristas On Tap is a service focused on providing highly skilled baristas who are capable of working in a variety of coffee environments whilst navigating a wide array of equipment. We prioritise skills that fit these requirements rather than the requirement of one specific employer and therefore do not act as a recruitment agency.

We also request that you do not use our services as a way of trialling different baristas and that you do not offer the baristas any jobs. It puts them in an awkward position and often makes them less likely to pick up shifts at your location.

Baristas On Tap can, however, provide you with a freelance barista for as long as you want; weeks, months, and even years if you need it.

Is there a minimum shift length?

We want our baristas to get out of bed excited for a full day of work, this means we request a minimum booking of six hours per shift.

Can the barista I book do other tasks during the shift?

They can, but we don’t really recommend it. You’re booking some of the best baristas available and to have them wash up for six hours might not be the greatest use of their skills. Our baristas will however get involved across the cafe; they are not adverse to rolling up their sleeves, bussing some tables, serving some customers and washing a few plates and cups where needed.

What if I need to cancel?

We get it, you're booking our baristas to fill gaps while you hire and then the right candidate comes along who can start tomorrow and you need to cancel your Baristas On Tap. It happens.

In order to look after our baristas we adhere to a simple cancellation policy;
We only charge for cancellations made on the day of the shift or the day before, if it's the day before we charge 50% of the booking and if you cancel on the day we charge 100% of the booking.
